The problem with learning any new language – in this case sign language, is that the more excited the native speaker is, the faster they tend to speak. Learning sign language in here has been a godsend and has enabled me to stay in contact with friends across the pod while on lockdown, and also send coded messages to those who are veterans in here, as no “newbies” know how to speak sign language. Compared to other languages I, Challen Miller, have learned, I picked it up extremely quickly-within a day or so. I’m getting pretty good at reading it in quick mode finally. Unfortunately, language is a diminishable skill, and once I’m out of here, unless I practice reading and speaking it, the skill, at the current level it’s at, will diminish.
