What is Random?

What does it mean to be random and can anything truly be random?

When something is unpredictable and contains no recognizable patterns we call it “random”. So let’s begin our hunt for the most random thing: a coin toss…

Coin flips and rolling dice are not intrinsically random ;they are only random because of our ignorance.

If we can know every initial condition the exact forces and properties in play for a particular flip or role, we could theoretically calculate the results before it even happens. Scientists have even built coin flipping robots that can precisely control the flip so that they gets the predicted results 100% of the time.

So here’s my question:

Is there anything you cannot predict, even if you knew everything? A process determined by nothing. And how can you be sure there are no patterns in what you are looking at? Maybe you just haven’t looked for the right pattern yet. Or maybe you have already seen true randomness but didn’t know it because you did not look for long enough.

As if protected by a sort of camouflage, a random process can and occasionally will produce predictable results.

The point is, randomness is difficult to identify . It is easier to be certain that something is not random than that it is. But despite this elusiveness, something interesting is going on, right now. Increasingly, we see, especially young people, who were calling clearly predictable things random. Like randomly running into your best friend at a popular restaurant. Those guys that showed up at your favorite restaurant last night that you didn’t know where it just random. They knew about the restaurant, and they felt like eating at the restaurant, and they were in the area. That sounds like it was pretty predictable.

This non-statistical use of the word random annoys some people, but it’s not that far off from the original meaning of the word.

In the 1300’s, random meant running (or at great speed). Later, it would be used to describe things that had no definite purpose.

It wasn’t until the 1800’s that random took on a particular mathematical definition. Then, in the 1970’s, MIT’s student paper popularized the use of the word random to simply mean “strange”.

Of course, just because something is considered strange, does not mean it has no discoverable cause. Why have we started calling so many predictable things random? Many theories revolve around the amount of new information theories and people we are confronted with at an increasing rate, now more than ever before. Perhaps it’s just easier, even a bit of relief to call things random so that we can move on to synthesize other information!!

Lone Wolf

I read a great piece today that I wanted to share here. Author was unknown. If anybody knows the author, please let me know so I can credit!

The wolf on the top of the hill
is never as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill.

Challen Miller

It’s not easy going it alone. But if you KEEP GOING, stay true to yourself… it will be worth it in the end.

The hardest walk you can make is the walk you make alone, but that is the walk that makes you the strongest. That is the walk that builds your character the most.

To all of you fighting battles alone. To all of you going against the grain, battling the naysayers:
Stay strong! Keep going! STAY STRONG. KEEP GOING.

This walk is hard. But the hardest walks lead to the greatest destinations. The toughest climbs always lead to the best views!

It WILL be worth it in the end. If you show what you are made of,
the RIGHT people will show up in your life.

You won’t be a lone wolf forever.

You have qualities only few can admire,
because most don’t possess. You have strength only few can understand,
because most have never experienced.

So don’t give in…
Don’t settle…
Don’t lower your expectations to fit into the world…
You were born to STAND OUT…
You were born to LEAD…

They say the wolf on the hill is never as hungry as the wolf climbing the hill.

Always be that wolf, climbing the hill.
Always hungry for more!
Always hungry to grow, to feed your mind and to rise to the highest level YOU can take yourself.

Never looking back…Always looking forward,
to the next feast.
Feast of success, in whatever you do.

It doesn’t matter if you have to walk alone for a while. It is much better to walk alone in the right direction,
than to follow the herd walking in the wrong direction.

Your destiny is in your hands!
Get out there and hunt it!

Challen Miller

If not now….then when?

There will never be a point in your life where it’s the “right time” to do a great thing. If you’re waiting for that perfect moment, that perfect time, it’s not going to happen. You know what you have to do? You have to create the perfect time and the perfect opportunity and the perfect situation.
So a lot of people become comfortable. They stop growing, they stop wanting anything, they become satisfied. People getting ready to go to jobs that they don’t like, jobs that are making them sick. When you are not pursuing your goal, you are literally committing spiritual suicide. When you have some goal out there that you’re stretching for, reaching for that takes you out of your comfort zone, you’ll find out some talents and abilities that you have that you didn’t know you had. When the message of misery visits you, what are you going to do? What will keep you in the game? There are things that you think that you will never need to know, that you may only need to know one time in your life, but that can save your life because you have that knowledge.
What is it that, at one point in time, you looked at and decided you couldn’t do it? That you talked yourself out of it. If you’re waiting on your next-door neighbour to make it happen, it will never happen for you. If you’re waiting on your mother, or your father, they may be so ancient in their thinking that they don’t understand this opportunity that you have, and if you’re waiting on them, it may never get done.
If you’re not where you are. If you’re not where you want to be, if you don’t have what you want to have, if you’re not where you think you should be in this particular place, it has nothing to do with “The System”, but has everything to do with the fact that you’re not making the sacrifice. If you don’t work to make your dream a reality, you’ll be working for somebody else to make *their* dream a reality.
Most people take their greatness and ideas to the graveyard with them. The wealthiest place on the planet is the graveyard – because in the graveyard, we will find inventions that we were never exposed to, ideas and dreams that never became reality, hopes and aspirations that were never acted upon.
The question is: What are you going to do with your time? What drives you? Greatness is a lot of small things done well. Day after day, workout after workout.
When things don’t work out for you…when things happen that you could not anticipate, what are the reasons that you can think of that can keep you strong? You will never, ever be successful until you turn your pain into greatness. Until you allow your pain to push you from where you are to where you need to be. Stop running from your pain and embrace your pain. Your pain is going to be a part of your pride, part of your end product. It’s easy to be on the bottom-it doesn’t take any effort to be a loser. It doesn’t take any motivation or any drive in order to stay down there at that low level. But to rise above that level, you have to harness your pain, your will, to say “I AM GOING TO CHALLENGE MYSELF!”
The biggest enemy you have to deal with is yourself. There’s an old African proverb that says “if there’s no enemy within, the enemy outside can do us no harm”.
When you have the opportunity of a lifetime, that opportunity means absolutely nothing if you don’t take advantage of it in the lifetime of this opportunity. People have said “if life knocks you down, try to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up”.

So proud to announce that less than two years after my arrest for SEVENTEEN counts of Attempting to Obtain Prescription by Fraud (“doctor shopping”), I have been officially sworn in as an intern to my attorney who got me through all my legal problems and has become a very good friend!

The Court thinks that I will be a great motivator to incoming Drug Court clients who don’t think the programme will work for them and also don’t trust Public Defenders since I graduated with top honours and did it so quickly.

Here’s to helping others and seeing that JUSTICE is served and we get addicts the help they need!

Toy Soldiers (trigger warning)

I was listening to a great song the other day by Martika. “Toy Soldiers”.

I had loved the melody and the rhythm for years, but when I listened to the lyrics, I discovered the song was about addiction.

The lyrics evoke memories of back in my days of addiction years ago. Waking up, can’t function, start making phone calls to see who has the hookup. Get frustrated when nobody answers at 7am. Desperation.

Making excuses to meet a dealer at 8am on a cold windy winters day. Heading out to a predetermined gas station and feeling relief the moment you have your score in your hand.

You go inside, buy a drink to consume the newly prized possession (that way it has time to kick in on the drive home…plus if you’re pulled over, you don’t have anything illegal for the cops to find).

Wash. Rinse. Repeat the next day.

Toy Soldiers by Martika

It wasn’t my intention to mislead you

It never should have been this way,

What can I say?

It’s true I did extend the invitation,

I never knew how long you’d stay,

When you hear temptation call

It’s your heart that takes,

Takes the fall

Won’t you come out and play with me?

Step by step,

Heart to heart

Left, right, left

We all fall down

Like toy soldiers

Bit by bit torn apart,

We never win,

But the battle wages on

For toy soldiers

It’s getting hard to wake up in the morning,

My head is spinning constantly,

How can it be?

How could I be so blind to this addiction?

If I don’t stop

The next one’s gonna be me

Only emptiness remains,

It replaces all the pain.

Only emptiness remains.

It replaces all the pain.

This is my baby. It was given as a Christmas gift by my mom last year and I have loved it ever since.

She is my goto every morning before work (I work as Head of Research & Development for an amazing Tulsa Company) so I definitely need my espresso!

Recently, I ordered a ton of Israeli espresso and just the sight of it was almost enough to make one cry. It was beautiful!

They say that an addict makes the best coffee, and I have many friends that agree after tasting my coffee, but yet this morning, I goto make my espresso while running late for work and I find I have no vanilla creamer!

Needless to say…I was not a happy camper after working late into the night on a Mathematical & Theoretical Analysis paper for work!
